In 1992, in the month of September, the Chair Person of the US House of Representatives Committee on Small Businesses held a session to address the problems and issues concerning small business franchisees. It was not the first session as the committee had been holding sessions for the past two years. After several meetings and discussions, the authorities decided to come up with an organization named American Franchise Association after consultation with various trade associations and franchisee dealers. Susan P. Kezios, the current President of American Franchisee Association, was responsible for the inception of such an association. However, she decided not to make an announcement until at least 5,000 outlets had been included as association members. It was in February 1993, that the first meeting was of AFA was organized by the association. Shortly after this meeting, AFA merged with an association called National Franchisee Association Coalition (NAFC) to form a new organization, National Alliance of Franchisees and Dealers (NAF&D). NAFC was founded in the year 1975. The basic motto of the American franchise association was to protect the business rights of the small business dealer franchisees as franchisors demands were turning out to be oppressive for their survival. The association works conscientiously to protect the rights and interests of all franchisees. This is made sure by providing additional space for resolving conflicts between franchisees and franchisors. The second best thing is that AFA has a strong channel of communication with federal as well as state lawmakers. What the reasons that any franchisee needs AFA- AFA stands for the insurance of franchisees regarding about their interests and rights. Since you buy insurance for precaution and not for remedy, similarly joining AFA is insurance in advance. Whether you are a franchisee or a franchisor, you will be able to benefit if you join the association. Since the organization aims at maintaining good relations between franchisors and franchisees, it is obvious that the trade is going to be smooth and profitable. Nevertheless American Franchise Association also advocates the franchisees and its public identity in front of the government and the law. It makes sure that the identity of franchise is not blackened due to any internal conflicts and disputes.
